Garden Planning

Posted on

What I’d really like to do today is give you some brilliant advice about how to plan your garden.  What plants to choose, how to go about determining how much space you’ll need to grow what you want to grow, how much of each veggie you want to plant to feed your family, etc.

Part of last year's harvest

Unfortunately, I’m not that good.  I’m a garden novice despite growing up helping my mom in the garden each Summer (sorry Mom, I didn’t pay very good attention:-() & despite having a garden of my own the past 3 years.

I really enjoy gardening. I love playing in the dirt, watching things grow & of course the best part, bringing in the harvest!

As much as I enjoy it however, I just haven’t devoted much time to it these past few years due to other commitments.  This year, I’m re-prioritizing a bit to make gardening a bigger focus this season! YAY!

Part of my plan is to share my experiences here & hopefully that will give me even more motivation to stay on track!

So, today I’m just going to share some of my plans.

My garden planning always begins simply with lists. I’m a list-maker, the old-fashioned kind, with pencil & paper:-).

My first list looks something like this…

2012 Wish List

Potatoes (red & yukon gold’s)

Onions

Sweet 100 Tomato

3-4 Roma Tomato plants

2-3 Bell Pepper plants

Green Beans

Peas

Broccoli

Celery

Cauliflower

Carrots

Jalapeno

Eggplant

Cantaloupe

Watermelon

Pumpkin

Gourds

Spinach

Lettuce

Swiss Chard

Asparagus

Brussel Sprouts

Cabbage

As you can see, some things have already not made the cut mostly due to space.  In the next couple of weeks I’ll begin posting pictures of my garden spaces & some of the creative spaces we’re making to expand our garden.

If there’s anyone out there reading this;-), I’d love to hear about your garden & how you go about planning it!
