A Sugar Fast Update: Why

I don’t have a meal plan to share with you all this week as our plans have us all over the place this week & there just wouldn’t be much to share.  Instead, I thought I’d share a little more about our month long, New Year’s Sugar Fast.

Some of you may wonder WHY we’d be doing such a thing.  Well, if I’m being completely honest, I too ask myself this question, like…. everyday {ok fine, so I ask myself this several times a day}.  First & foremost, is probably just because we are so addicted to sugar & we’d like not to be.  I mentioned last week that we really don’t eat a lot of processed sugars.  A couple years ago we made the switch to only having sweeteners like honey & sucanat in our kitchen rather than the typical white or brown sugar & we also don’t buy any processed sweets like cookies, crackers, candy etc.  However, even with eating only the more natural forms of sugar, we still become so accustomed to having that in our diet that we crave it daily & can easily overindulge.  

Our second reason for our Sugar Fast is that we are trying to bring our candida levels back into check.  Candida is a form of yeast that everyone has & should have.  But, candida can become overpopulated due to things like antibiotic use, high-stress, consuming alcohol, taking oral contraceptives, or in our case, eating too much sugar.

Candida overgrowth has been linked to many issues such as digestive disorders, chronic fatigue, mood swings, seasonal allergies, ADD/ADHD, skin issues, fertility & on & on.  Since sugar feeds candida, it has to go, at least for a time.

Trying to bring candida in check by starving it alone can take some time, some say many months or even years.  I’m not that patient & I want to get things taken care of as quickly as possible.  I’m not saying I’ve got this all figured out, but this is what we’ve chosen to do.  We’ve decided, in addition to our Sugar Fast, to also use essential oils to help kill off the extra candida living in our systems.  We use only therapeutic grade essential oils from Young Living & take them internally using empty veg-capsules.  So far, these are the oils we’ve been taking daily, based on my research for oils that are antifungal & help kill off candida:

  • Oregano
  • Melaleuca Alternifolia
  • Lemongrass
  • Mountain Savory
  • Ocotea

Again, I’m not an expert, but this is what my reading & research has led us to doing.  We also take high quality probiotics, again from Young Living {we take their Life 5}, daily to help populate the good bacteria internally which also helps to bring balance back to the system.

I won’t lie & say eliminating sugar from our diets has been easy & I know we haven’t been perfect either, but the farther we get into it, it does get “easier”.  The Ocotea I mentioned above also helps with sugar cravings & that has been a huge help for me.  We’re 12 days in & I’m feeling slightly more confident that we can make it through this :).

Our New Year’s Sugar Fast & Weekly Meal Plan {No. 20}

Sugar Fast

We’ve started this thing, where about once a year,  we go on a “sugar fast” of sorts.  In the past, we’ve always been a bit lenient, making such allowances as one day off each week, still eating honey or small amounts of other natural sweeteners or there’s my personal favorite, still eating, just a few, chocolate chips.  This year we decided to be all out sticklers & call it quits without any of our favorite exceptions, for a month that is {I’m not sure I’m ready to sign on to a lifetime of no sweets just yet!}.

Now granted, the majority of “sweets eating” we do in our house consists of homemade goodies that were made using more natural sweeteners such as honey or sucanat, but it is still so easy to get into a habit of overdoing it on the sweet stuff.  Our goal is to make it a month without any sweets or sugar, even in it’s natural form.  It’s been 5 days so far for us, so it’s a bit soon to predict how we’ll do, but we’re on our way!

I’ll try to post some periodic updates this month with how we’re doing & maybe even some tips for anyone who may be interested in doing their own little sugar fast.

Fall Reading

Yesterday, a couple of books were delivered from Amazon that have been on my wishlist for a LONG time.  I am SO excited to get some time to sit down with these.

In case you can’t make out all the cover info in the picture, they are Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon & Real Food for Mother and Baby by Nina Planck.

I LOVE reading about anything natural health related & I’ve heard such great things about both of these books for the past couple of years, I’m kind of surprised I’ve waited this long to add them to my library!  Mr. Wiles is just starting to get more interested in eating actual food, so it will be fun to see what Real Food for Mother and Baby has to say about first foods.  I already know quite a bit about what Nourishing Traditions teaches, and in fact, I honestly thought I had this book for quite a while, but I realized it was just because I’ve read so much about it online.  I’m excited to have it as a resource of my own now.

I’ve also just started reading The Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson.  I received this one as a gift at one of our baby showers.  I’ve just made it through the introduction so far {it’s not long, I’m just a distracted reader :)} but I already think it seems like it will be a great resource for mommyhood.  If you’ve read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I’ve mentioned before that I tend to read multiple books at a time, so I’m trying to keep my current reads to just these three.  I could probably get through things a lot quicker if I’d just pick one, but I don’t have that kind of focus ;).  You can check out the rest of my reading list here if you’d like.
